SMB 3.0 was introduced in Windows Server 2012 and further enhanced in Windows Server 2012 R2 (SMB 3.02) and Windows Server 2016 (SMB 3.1.1). This version introduced technologies that may significantly improve performance and availability of the file server. Prior to Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, the number of credits granted to the client varied dynamically between Smb2CreditsMin and Smb2CreditsMax based on an algorithm that attempted to determine the optimal number of credits to grant based on network latency and credit usage. In Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, the SMB server was changed to unconditionally grant credits upon request up to the configured maximum number of credits. As part of this change, the credit throttling mechanism, which reduces the size of each connection's credit window when the server is under memory pressure, was removed. Printing is still a crucial factor in many business processes. However, due to the elimination of the print server cluster function since Windows Server 2012, printing is missing an important safeguard. Working with highly compressed columnar indexes is certainly a great start when taking on those BI workloads. But SQL Server 2012 adds another element to the mix to improve performance even more: batch mode processing. Analytical BI queries must often scan extremely large sets of data and perform numerous complex operations, even to produce a small result set. Batch mode processing can operate on many rows at a time-a batch-rather than one row at a time, as is typical with row-mode processing, the type used for most online transactional processing (OLTP) operations.
3) Portability: A volume that is under deduplication control is an atomic unit. You can back up the volume and restore it to another server. You can rip it out of one Windows 2012 server and move it to another. Everything that is required to access your data is located on the drive. All of the deduplication settings are maintained on the volume and will be picked up by the deduplication filter when the volume is mounted. The only thing that is not retained on the volume are the schedule settings that are part of the task-scheduler engine. If you move the volume to a server that is not running the Data Deduplication feature, you will only be able to access the files that have not been deduplicated.
Good news, this same client connector install procedure still works exactly as shown above, even after the recent release of Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Update: April 2014, KB2919355. This is a good sign! I also didn't notice any client connector updates after upgrading then rebooting my R2 Essentials server. So this is what I'd call smooth sailing, and some measure of confidence that my minor "hack" outlined above has no issues, and "sticks" even after applying a significant update bundle. Yay!
Does anyone know an easy way to compress (without moving) files like PDF and jpeg/png/etc. on Windows Server 2012? Currently one of my clients' file servers is slowly clogging up, and I see a lot of (work-related) PDF files and pictures (mostly between 1 and 3 MB each).
Windows Server has had file compression capability built into the OS for a long time. To enable it, go to the server console and launch File Explorer. Navigate to the folder that contains the content that should be compressed, right-click on the folder, and select the "Advanced" button on the "General" tab. This will pop open the "Advanced Attributes" property sheet for that folder. Enable the check box labeled "Compress contents to save disk space". Windows will now compress all items within that folder hierarchy.
If it's the former, with files that are already in a compressed format, the answer is to buy more storage and depending on how your architecture is setup, integrate it into your existing file server. Is this file server a physical server or virtual? What kind of RAID? If it's a physical server and all available drive bays are in use, I would recommend looking at a NAS solution. There are several that are quite affordable.
Deduplication is great and highly recommend it especially if you already have Server 2012/R2 or other dedupe licensing. However, it doesn't work as wonderfully for PDFs as other files. For the PDFs, we use Nuance PowerPDF since the reduce file size function can select multiple PDFs at once. This is especially helpful if you have bloated PDFs. Acrobat has this functionality as well, but I'm not sure if it can reduce multiple PDFs at once.In one of our PDF repositories we had used old versions of Paperport to scan hundreds of thousands of pages of paper documents for archiving. It was about 130GB or so. We reduced it to less than 30 GB by reducing the size. Obviously, your mileage will vary greatly, depending on how "clean" your PDFs are.
